What is Scoliosis?

Scoliosis is a condition that typically occurs during childhood while the spinal bones are still forming and causes a curvature of the spine. The cause of this condition is not known for most cases. It is believed that scoliosis is hereditary or due to some sort of trauma, such as an injury that occurred during birth. Scoliosis usually shows up in either the pelvis or the lower back area.

What is the Cause of Scoliosis?

While the primary cause of scoliosis is unknown, we do know that a condition called “idiopathic scoliosis” affects young children and is often related to factors such as genetics since it is known to be passed from one generation to the next. During adolescence, a child may be more hesitant to expose the areas of the body that are typically affected by their parents or other adults. Therefore the condition could go undetected until it reaches a very severe state.

Types of Scoliosis

Scoliosis is categorized into two types, structural and non-structural.

Structural scoliosis is diagnosed by the curving of the spine with rotation, and it is typically considered to be irreversible. The cause of structural scoliosis for most people is unknown, or it could be the result of underlying medical condition or disease, such as:

  • Congenital defects, such as spina bifida
  • Injuries
  • Infections
  • Muscle disorders, such as muscular dystrophy, Marfan’s syndrome or cerebral palsy
  • Tumors

Non-structural, also known as functional scoliosis, is characterized by the curving of the spine without rotation. It is reversible since it is caused by conditions such as a difference in leg length, a muscle spasm, or pain.
