What is Failed Back Surgery Syndrome?

Failed Back Surgery Syndrome (FBSS) describes the condition experienced by patients who have had an unsuccessful spinal or back surgery and continue to suffer from pain.

Back surgery does not allow doctors to remove pain. Surgeons are only able to correct anatomical issues. The lesions, or injuries, that cause the pain need to be identified before the surgery. Back surgery cannot be completely successful in dealing with the pain when the initial cause of the pain was not the focus of the operation.

Unfortunately, each subsequent surgery decreases the chances that the patient will receive any relief from their pain.

Causes of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome

Many patients who have undergone traditional back and open neck surgeries are affected with failed back surgery syndrome. FBSS is not a medical condition. Rather, it is an umbrella term that includes numerous conditions that are the result of an unsuccessful spine surgery. FBSS is defined as a back or neck surgery that does not correct a patient’s original problem, worsens the existing condition or causes new problems and pain.

The contributing factors that cause FBSS include:

  • Spinal fusion failure
  • Hardware
  • Failure to properly treat the condition(s)
  • Failure to properly diagnose the condition(s)
  • Missed bone fragment or disc that continues to pinch nerve
  • The formation of scar tissue
  • Creation of a new spine problem at another level after the open-spine surgery
  • Inadequate decompression of nerve root
  • The surgery is performed at the wrong location on the spine
  • Nerve damage

Symptoms of Failed Back Surgery Syndrome

Patients with failed spinal surgery typically experience new or persistent pain in the legs or back afterwards. The pain could be to the same degree and in the same area of the pain before the surgery. In some cases, the pain may of a different nature and in a different location.

Patients with FBSS may experience or develop:

  • The inability to recuperate
  • Pain below or above the treated area of the spine
  • Continuous, chronic pain
  • Spasms
  • New spine conditions
  • Depression
  • Anxiety
  • Prescription drug dependency
  • Stiff joints
  • The inability to recuperate
  • Limited mobility
  • A dull, aching pain in the legs, neck and back

What is the Treatment for Failed Back Surgery Syndrome?

French Chiropractic and Wellness Center uses two forms of spinal decompression including flexion/distraction chiropractic tables, and a spinal decompression table delivering FDA-approved decompression therapy to treat patients with Failed Back Surgery Syndrome. Spinal decompression therapy is approved for the treatment of neck and back pain. Decompression therapy is not only safe and effective treatment, but also quite comfortable for patients. Spinal decompression therapy involves decompressing the spine using non-surgical distraction and positioning. The procedure is a great alternative to traditional spinal surgery for people with severe and chronic neck or back pain that travels to the arms and legs.

By creating and maintaining negative pressure between each vertebra, spinal decompression therapy decompresses each disc to allow the replenishing of fluids, nutrients, and oxygen to the injured or degenerated disk. The therapy creates a vacuum that moves the herniated disk back into a more favorable position. Obsolete traction tables only stretch the length of the spine. Compression tables use state-of-the-art technology to isolate the degenerated disk for compression. Compression therapy is a more precise form of therapy.

Chiropractic care focuses on restoring proper segmental motion to dysfunctional vertebral regions. Correcting this issue reduces pain while improving the functioning and flexibility of the spine by eliminating the pressure on the nerve endings that are on the joint’s surface.
