What is Subluxation?

Subluxation is a general term that chiropractors use to describe the process of when a vertebrae misaligns. When broken down, the word “subluxation” separates into two parts in Latin. “Sub” represents “somewhat,” while “luxate” represents “dislocate.” When a vertebrae moves from its natural position, or ceases to move correctly, the surrounding blood vessels, spinal nerves, and muscle are affected by stress and pressure. The stress and pressure alone can be responsible for a wide range of hindered bodily processes. This is because the spinal column nerves connect to all parts of the body, as well as all organs.

If the subluxation is not corrected over time, nerve damage worsens, and subluxation degeneration begins. Subluxation and its associated effects can be treated by visiting a licensed chiropractor regularly. The chiropractor can also make dietary and exercise recommendations to help patients manage the condition.

What Causes Subluxation?

Subluxation occurs under two types of circumstances: regular actions and unique instances. A regular action might be poor posture, an abnormal sleeping position, or using improper lifting strategies. On the other hand, a unique instance of subluxation might stem from trauma, an injury, a car accident, a fall, etc.

Signs of Subluxation

In general, back and neck pain are two extremely common signs of vertebral subluxation if nerve compression has occurred from the misalignment. However, there are many other signs of subluxation that are noticed by patients. Symptoms have been known to include, but aren’t limited to

  • Stiffness, soreness, tenderness, or pain in the back/neck
  • Trouble with balancing
  • Headaches/dizziness
  • Muscle tightness, weakness, or spasms in the spine
  • Decreased mobility in the spine
  • Tingling, numbness, or pain in extremities
  • Joint stiffness or pain
  • Fatigue
  • Poor health in general
  • Decreased bodily ability to heal injuries and wounds

What is the Treatment for Subluxation?

French Chiropractic and Wellness Center uses two forms of spinal decompression including flexion/distraction chiropractic tables, and a spinal decompression table delivering FDA-approved spinal decompression therapy. Manual adjustments by hand or assisted by an instrument are also employed for conservative treatment of subluxation.

Chiropractic care focuses restoring proper segmental motion to dysfunctional vertebral regions. This ultimately improves function and flexibility and reduces pain, as pressure is removed from the nerve endings that line the joint’s surface.  French Chiropractic and Wellness Center is dedicated to treating patients suffering from subluxation in Madison and the surrounding areas. Those suffering from discomfort and pain should make an appointment soon in order to begin discovering various treatment options that can restore quality of life and happiness.
